As many of you are aware, I have been doing translation work for Ars-Comica/Megatokyo for a few years now. And when you have pointed out that I have made mistakes in the past, I own up to it and correct it. I am about to tell you what happened to me earlier today when I decided to do a good deed and offer my services to another fansub group.
Como ustedes sabran, he estado traduciendo para Ars-Comica/Megatokyo ya por varios años. Y cuando ustedes me han dicho que he hecho errores en el pasado, me aguanto y lo corrigo. Lo que les voy a contar es lo que me paso hoy cuando decidi hacer una buena obra y ofrecer mis servicios a otro grupo de traductores.
So I was looking through my usual manga sites and noticed that one of the stories I followed past the anime, Dance in the Vampire Bund, was updated to chapter 46. So I thought "Sweet!!!" and started to read it. Halfway through, I felt like I had either picked up a bad Engrish version or I'd been playing too many games to read correctly. So I just decided to blame it on lack of sleep and kept reading, still not comprehending all that was written.
Pues estaba vagando en los sitios de manga usuales cuando me di cuenta que una de las historias que segui despues del anime, Dance in the Vampire Bund, habia actualizado al capitulo 46. Asi que pense "Genial!!!" y empeze a leer. A medias, empeze a sentirme como si habia agarrado una copia en Engrish totonaca o si habia estado jugando demasiados juegos para leer bien. Asi que decidi hecharle la culpa a la falta de sueño y segui leyendo, aun no comprendiendo lo que estaba escrito.
So I get to the end and I see that the manga was released by
LustNoFansub and decided to pay their site a visit. I registered and picked up their Spanish version and it was easier to understand that way. Now, I know many will say "That just means you're thinking in Spanish or something." But I had others complain to me about the way it was written, so I know I'm not the only one. So I decided to be nice and help these guys proofread it some more since I believe that the best quality check for translations comes from native speakers. This is why my translation team is all latin american.
Asi que termino de leer y veo que el manga fue distribuido por
LustNoFansub y fui a darle una visita a su sitio. Me registre y me puse a leer su version en Español e imediatamente fue mucho mas facil leerlo asi. Ahora, ya se lo que piensan "Eso solo quiere decir que estas pensando en Español o algo." Pero no soy el unico que lo noto. Hubieron varias personas se quejaron de como estaba escrito, asi que yo se que no soy el unico. Asi que decidi ayudarles a repasarla un poco mas ya que yo creo que la mejor revision de calidad para traducciones viene de personas natales a la lengua. Por eso es que mi equipo de traduccion es completamente latinoamericano.
So I hit up one of the admins and say "dude, your proofreader fsck'd up. I can fix it for ya." and link him to
my google docs so he can see my skills. Granted, I did tell him some of what I said here "looks like your proofreader is an English student, not an English speaker" "You should check with a native speaker before releasing this" and so on. All constructive criticism, I assure you. If you don't believe me, go to their site and ask to see the original message I sent.
Asi que le mande un mensaje a uno de los administradores y le dije "mano, tu proofreader la rego. yo te puedo ayudar a arreglarlo" y le di un link a
mi google docs para que pudiera ver mis skillz. Dado que tambien dije unos de los comentarios que he mencionado aqu "parece que tu proofreader esta estudiando Ingles, no lo habla nativamente" "Deberian de pedirle a alguien que habla el idioma que lo revise antes de publicarlo" etc. Pura critica constructiva, les aseguro. Si no me creen, vayan a su sitio y pidanles ver el mensaje original.
So I write about half the chapter in revised form. In an easy to read script format with pages labeled and everything so they can review and change as needed. And to my surprise, when I come back, I am
BANNED. Goes to show that some people think you're trying to troll them when you're really trying to help. So what am I gonna do? Nothing really. I ranted here and that's good enough. You have the links to their site and to my google docs so you can be the judge of what reads easier. I'm sure the ban won't be lifted even if they were to read this, so I doubt I'll be visiting their site again. Which is sad, because I wouldn't have minded helping them with future releases if it meant reading the chapter before its release.
Asi que escribi como la mitad del capitulo en forma revisada. En un formato tipo script para que fuera facil de leer y con las paginas separadas y toda la cosa para que pudieran revisar y cambiar como necesitaran. Y para mi sorpresa, cuando regreso, me dieron un
BAN. Eso te muestra que alguna gente piensan que los estas tratando de joder cuando solamente estas tratando de ayudar. Y que voy a hacer? Absolutamente nada. Ya dije lo que queria decir y eso es suficiente. Ustedes tienen links para el sitio y para my google docs asi que pueden juzgar cual es mas facil de leer. Estoy seguro que ese ban no se perdonara pronto aunque lean esto, asi que dudo que vaya a visitar su sitio otra vez. Triste, en realidad, ya que felizmente les hubiera ayudado a revisar la calidad de sus publicaciones si significara poder leer el capitulo antes de publicar.
